Terra Firma boss Guy Hands lowered the boom on EMI employees yesterday, confirming plans to lay off as many as 2,000 workers over the next six months in a bid to radically revamp the newly acquired music major. Apparently surviving the bloodletting is Roger Ames, the head of EMI's North American operations, who has, at least for now, solidified his role as the top-ranking music industry insider at the company. After recently picking up interim authority for EMI's operations in the UK following the exit of London-based creative chief Tony Wadsworth, Ames is expected to be formally named president of North America and UK, sources close to the company said.
